Decorative wall shelving may save your child’s life!
By zoogie on October 18th, 2007
It happens all the time. Young children climb on furniture. Many parents do not realize what a health risk this can be. Bookshelves are like ladders for children. They see the shelves as a way of climbing higher. With each shelf that they climb, the chance of tipping the shelf becomes greater. As the shelf becomes more top-heavy, it is likely to tip over. This could crush your child, as the bookshelf pins your child against the floor. Injuries and even deaths are likely to occur. Many people do not even use bookshelves for displaying books. I, for one, use bookshelves to display figurines and photos. I have teenagers though. People with young children should only use bookshelves that have lockable doors attached to them. The shelves will not be accessable by the child when the doors are properly secured. If displaying figurines and photos only, parents of young children should use decorative wall shelving rather than bookcases. The shelves hang on the wall and out of the reach of children.
