You can enroll in a program of 2 or 4 years when you go to dental hygienist school. If you take a 2 year program, you will graduate with an associate’s degree from a local school. This 2 year course will enable you to work in a dentist’s office. The 4 year program is essential for advanced tasks like teaching, researching and any kind of clerical work. There are some dental hygienist online programs. A dental hygienist needs to be recognized in the state they want to work in to get a job there. In order to qualify for a license, you will need to graduate from an accredited dental hygiene program and pass written and clinical exams. Almost all states require the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination in addition to the regional or state clinical exam. Some states may require an exam on the legal aspects of dental hygiene practice.
