With all the different options for training programs out
June 1st, 2009
With all the different options for training programs out there, it doesn’t have to be difficult to find a good program to learn how to become a medical transcriptionist. A number of junior colleges, community colleges, and vocational schools offer medical transcriptionist training programs, both campus-based and online. There are a few things you might want to consider when choosing a program however.
Most importantly, you must choose an authorized program. Accreditation is optional for educational institutions that provide these courses, although you may be required to graduate from a recognized program to be authenticated later. The Approval Committee for Certificate Programs (ACCP) of the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) and the American Health Information Management Association both sanction medical transcription training programs. You can check the websites for these organizations in order to find out which programs they have accredited, and many training programs will list their accreditation on their website as well.
It is also a good idea to choose a program that offers you a chance for hands-on training in the form of an internship if this is possible for you. This gives you a better chance to learn what you will be doing in your new career.
