Leather is a material developed through the treatment of hides and skins of animals, primarily cow hide. The tanning operation converts the putrescible hide into a strong, life long and multi-purpose natural material for various uses.
Together with wood and leather, was the basis of a good deal of ancient technical practices. The leather industry and the fur industry are separate trades that are defined by the signification of their natural materials. Taxidermy similarly will utilise the skin of animals, but usually the animals head and a portion of the back are used. Hides and skins are used in the producing of glue and gelatin as well.
